Like most Montenegrin cities, Bar has belonged to different civilizational and cultural worlds throughout its history. However, unlike other Montenegrin cities, Bar today is not recognizable only by one of the worlds of which it was a part, sometimes for centuries. On the legacy of one epoch, a new one was created and built. In this new legacy, the achievements of the previous one have always been clearly recognized.

The city of olive trees, the sea gate of Montenegro, the centuries-old hearth of coexistence, regardless of religion and nation, Bar is a combination of modernity, tradition and beauty. It is important as a dynamic economic center of Montenegro, but as a city it preserves a rich cultural and historical tradition. Some of the most significant civilizational achievements in Montenegro originated in Bar: the remains of the oldest written monuments are preserved here, the most important literary and historical work of the Montenegrin Middle Ages was created here, the city was the seat of the oldest religious institution of Montenegro (Bar Archdiocese). In addition, Bar has one of the oldest olive trees in the world, the Old Olive Tree on Mirovica, over 2000 years old.
